On 1 July 1867 the Dominion of Canada was created by the confederation of the Provinces of Canada (today Ontario and Quebec), Nova Scotia, and New
Brunswick.  In October, as an entry in a patriotic poetry contest, Alexander Muir, a school principal near Toronto, composed the words and music of “The Maple Leaf For Ever”. It became the most popular patriotic song composed in English Canada.
